Portugal will reopen applications for its national incentive for electric vehicles on 29 December 2025, releasing €17.6 million to encourage low emission transport across the country.
Managed by the Fundo Ambiental, the program will remain available until 12 February 2026 or until funds run out. It unusually extends support to purchases made since January 2025, offering reassurance to early adopters.
Incentive for electric vehicles focuses on cleaner mobility
The scheme targets individuals, companies, municipalities, social institutions and transport authorities investing in low emission mobility. As in previous editions, some categories require scrappage of fossil fuel vehicles more than ten years old.
Public and social entities remain eligible for higher support, reflecting their heavier vehicle use and broader social role.
Eligibility for this benefit
A standout feature of this opportunity is retroactive eligibility from 1 January 2025. Anyone who already purchased a qualifying electric vehicle or installed charging equipment earlier this year can still apply.
Light electric commercial vehicles are excluded for now, as they will be handled under a separate support program. Authorities say the goal is to increase confidence, stimulate immediate action and avoid hesitation in the market.
Incentivo Veiculos Eletricos: How much Financial Support is on Offer
Under the incentivo veiculos eletricos, grants include up to €4,000 for private electric car buyers and €5,000 for municipalities, transport agencies and social organizations, subject to price caps and scrappage rules.
Support also covers cargo bikes, city bicycles, electric motorcycles and small electric vehicles. Residential charging installation receives up to 80 percent co funding, capped per parking space with limits per resident and per building.
Individuals may submit one application, while legal entities may apply for multiple categories under specific limits.
Backing Portugal’s climate strategy
Successful applicants will have 90 days to finalize purchases and submit documentation through the Fundo Ambiental portal.
Officials present the measure as part of Portugal’s broader Green Mobility agenda, aimed at cutting emissions, modernizing the national fleet and supporting safer and cleaner transport.
