Turkmenistan e-Visa Is Now Live: No Invitation Letter for Tourists, Approval in 24 Hours

Turkmenistan e-Visa Is Now Live No Invitation Letter for Tourists, Approval in 24 Hours

Getting a tourist visa for Turkmenistan has long been hard. For many years, travelers needed a letter of invitation from a local travel company, and the country’s migration office had to approve it first. That is now changing.

The Turkmenistan e-Visa system started on 1 October 2026. Travelers can apply online, upload their documents, pay and follow their case from one website. For tourists, the best news is simple – the portal does not list an invitation letter as a required document.

What happened and when

On 1 October 2026, the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan said that all steps to issue electronic visas must now go through its online e-Visa system. One day later, the official portal began showing the main rules. These include the visa types, the documents you need, and how long each option takes.

Travel news websites quickly noticed the change. Turkmenistan is one of the most closed and hard-to-visit countries in the world, so any step toward easier entry is big news for travelers, tour companies, and airlines.

Three types of e-Visa

The portal currently offers three categories:

  • e-TU is for tourism.
  • e-BS is for business travel, for stays of up to 30 days.
  • e-HM is for humanitarian work.

Each type has its own special document rule. Tourists using e-TU do not need an invitation letter. Business travelers using e-BS still need an invitation from a company or organization registered in Turkmenistan, and the letter must state the traveler’s job position. Humanitarian visitors using e-HM must provide an official letter from a humanitarian group or a United Nations agency that confirms their assignment.

How the Turkmenistan e-Visa works for tourists

For a tourist, the paperwork is much lighter than before. The official e-visa portal of Turkmenistan says that every applicant needs these three things:

  • A scan of the passport photo page. The passport must stay valid for at least six months from the day you enter the country.
  • A recent color photo. It must follow international airline-body (ICAO) rules, with a plain white background. The portal says it should be taken in the last six months. One report adds that the face should fill about 70 to 80 percent of the photo height. Tinted glasses are not allowed, and headwear is only allowed for religious or medical reasons.
  • A working email address. The system uses it to send status updates, check documents, and deliver the e-Visa itself.

You can also add a travel plan or a confirmed hotel booking, and medical insurance. These are optional, not required.

This change did not come out of nowhere. Reports say Turkmenistan changed its migration law in 2025 to create the e-Visa. The law says an invitation does not need to be arranged under the electronic procedure.

How fast can you get it?

Speed is one of the most attractive parts of the new system. There are three processing options:

Option Processing Time
Regular 7 working days
Urgent 3 working days
Super Urgent 24 hours

The faster you need it, the more you will probably pay, although the official price list is not yet public (more on this below).

What about the cost?

This is the biggest open question. The portal does not show a fixed fee table. Official portal says the price is worked out during your application and depends on the choices you make, such as the visa type and the processing speed.

Here is what is known:

  • You pay online when you submit your application.
  • Prices are shown in US dollars.
  • Bank fees are not included in the price.
  • One report says service fees cannot be refunded, so check everything carefully before you pay.

Because there is no public price list, you cannot know the exact cost until you start an application. Be careful with any website that claims to show an “official” fixed price.

Other tools on the portal

The website has several useful features beyond the application form.

Status check. Anyone can check the state of an application or a visa. You need to enter any two of these: your last name, your passport number, and your visa number.

Passport transfer. If you get a new passport after your e-Visa is issued, you can move the visa to the new passport. This is helpful for people who renew a passport between getting the visa and traveling. If your name has changed, the portal reportedly asks you to file a new application instead.

Three languages. The site works in English, Russian, and Turkmen.

Help line. There is a support phone number, +993 12 380050, and an email address, visa@migration.gov.tm given on the official Turkmenistan e-visa portal.

The problem travelers have found

The launch is not perfect. Our specialists checked the portal on 7th October, they could not find a “Register” or “Create account” button. The login page asks for a username and password, and it only offers a password reset. Moreover, site does offer an “Apply Now” option for individuals.

So it is still unclear how every new traveler will get access. The portal may still be rolling out, and the situation could change quickly. If you plan to apply, try the site yourself and contact the help line if you get stuck.

Extra checks to expect

The portal’s text also suggests a stricter, more careful process than a simple form. The reports say that:

  • Applications go through document checks and a biometric step, including a live selfie that is matched to your passport photo.
  • The form asks about where you will stay, including region, city, and address, and about border zones.
  • There seem to be tools for travel companies, such as group applications and company payments. These details are not fully explained yet.

If your trip includes areas close to borders or restricted places, plan extra time. The public requirements do not explain whether the e-Visa covers special permits for those areas.

What is still unknown

Several important facts are still missing from public information:

  • how long an e-TU visa stays valid, and the maximum number of days you can stay
  • how many entries are allowed
  • which nationalities can use the system
  • the exact fees
  • which airports and border crossings will accept the e-Visa

Until these details are published, treat any claim about them with caution. Always trust the official portal over blogs, travel agents, or social media posts.

What travelers should do now

  • Check your passport. It needs at least six months of validity from your entry date.
  • Prepare a good photo. Poor photos are a likely reason for delays in a new system.
  • Pick the right visa type. Tourists should choose e-TU. Do not use e-BS or e-HM unless they truly fit your trip.
  • Apply early. Even with a 24-hour option, a new system can have delays.
  • Keep copies. Save your approval email and carry a printed or on-screen copy when you travel.
  • Ask your airline. Make sure the airline’s check-in staff know about the new e-Visa before you fly.

Why this matters

Central Asia has been moving toward easier travel. Neighboring countries have been adding online visas, and there is ongoing talk of a shared regional visa. Turkmenistan joining this trend could bring more tourists to places like Ashgabat, the capital, and its desert and ancient sites. It could also make planning easier for businesses that sell trips.

The Turkmenistan e-Visa is a major step toward a simpler, faster entry process, but it is still very new. The missing price list, the unclear sign-up path, and the open questions about stay length mean that careful travelers should wait for more details or double-check each step on the official website. Rules can change quickly in the first weeks of any new system.
