Premier Giorgia Meloni’s cabinet approved a sweeping new bill Wednesday aimed at curbing the flow of illegal immigrants. The legislation grants authorities the power to enforce naval blockades against ships carrying asylum seekers attempting to reach Italian shores.
This aggressive move follows immediately after the EU passed its own migration pact. Rome intends to implement these measures quickly to secure its borders. Under the new rules, officials can block ships from entering territorial waters for 30 days if they pose a risk to public order or national security.
Tougher Penalties for Transporting Undocumented Immigrants
The blockade orders can be extended for up to six months during drastic influxes. Violators face stiff consequences, including fines reaching 50,000 euros. Repeat offenses could result in the confiscation of vessels, a provision seemingly targeting humanitarian rescue groups assisting undocumented immigrants.
The government also plans to revive offshore processing hubs. This involves transporting intercepted asylum applicants to third countries like Albania, despite previous legal challenges that stalled similar efforts for two years.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani claims the EU’s recent stance validates Italy’s hardline approach. The bill now heads to parliament for final approval before it can officially take effect.
