Indonesia has launched a new global citizenship visa that gives lifetime residency to foreign nationals with close family or historical links to the country. The policy was officially announced on January 26, 2026, and is aimed at encouraging people with Indonesian roots to live, work, or invest in Indonesia long term.
The program is called Global Citizenship of Indonesia (GCI). It allows eligible foreigners to stay in Indonesia permanently without changing their current citizenship. Officials say the move offers legal clarity while avoiding issues linked to dual nationality.
Who qualifies for Indonesia’s global citizenship visa
Under the global citizenship visa, former Indonesian citizens can apply, along with their children or grandchildren up to the second generation. Legal spouses of Indonesian or former Indonesian citizens are also eligible. Children born from legal marriages between Indonesians and foreign nationals can apply as well.
Approved applicants receive an indefinite permanent stay permit, commonly known as Indonesia permanent residence or Indonesia PR. The visa allows long-term stay and unlimited re-entry, but it does not include political rights or an Indonesian passport.
Applications are submitted online through Indonesia’s official immigration website. The system handles visa approval, conversion to permanent residence, permit extensions, and re-entry permits in one process.
The visa is not available to people involved in separatist activities, or to foreign military, intelligence officers, or government officials.
Immigration Minister Agus Andrianto said similar programs exist in other countries and have proven effective. For families, professionals and investors with Indonesian roots, Indonesia’s new visa offers a stable and simple path to long term residence.
