Aberdeen Airport hit by snow storm – Which Flights Are Cancelled or Diverted

Aberdeen Airport hit by snow storm as flights cancelled and diverted

Aberdeen Airport faced major disruption on Wednesday after heavy snow and blizzard conditions swept across northern Scotland. Flights were cancelled delayed or diverted as crews struggled to keep the runway safe during one of the busiest travel days of the week.

The disruption began early in the morning when worsening weather made landings unsafe. Several aircraft were held in the air or diverted as snow and ice reduced braking levels on the runway. The chaos followed an amber weather warning issued by the Met Office covering large parts of the country.

The amber alert warned of up to 40cm of snowfall within 48 hours. In the north east the warning quickly turned into whiteout conditions. Aberdeen Airport snow clearance teams worked throughout the morning but operational limits remained in place.

Airport officials confirmed that reduced runway grip was the key issue. This led to ongoing checks and temporary restrictions that affected Aberdeen Airport flight status across several airlines.

A flight from Bergen was forced to return to Norway after circling above Aberdeen with no improvement in conditions. Services from London Paris and Amsterdam were also impacted. KLM cancelled flights from Amsterdam because of low runway capacity linked to severe weather.

EasyJet reported delays on outbound flights to London Gatwick due to air traffic control limits. Airlines said passengers were being rebooked where possible and safety remained the priority.

Aberdeen Airport later confirmed the runway was operational but warned conditions could change. Travelers are urged to check Aberdeen Airport flight status before leaving home.
